Your Hark newsletters arrive on their own, no forwarding needed. This guide is the optional add-on: forward newsletters you already subscribe to in Gmail, including paid ones, and they join your daily newscast too.

How to forward Gmail newsletters to Hark News,
in one minute

One address, one filter, done forever. The setup takes about a minute on a computer, and from then on every newsletter you get flows into your daily audio briefing on its own. Your personal mail never leaves your inbox, and Hark never connects to your account.

Before you start

Do this once on a computer. Gmail's forwarding and filter settings only exist in the desktop web version, not the mobile app. You'll need your Hark account open in one tab and Gmail in another. If you're mid-onboarding, the guided setup walks you through every click; these written steps cover the same ground for reference.

Step 1: Add your Hark address to Gmail forwarding

  1. In Hark, copy your personal forwarding address (it looks like you-xxxx@harknews.com). Every account gets its own.
  2. Click Hark's blue button, and your Gmail settings open directly on the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
  3. Click Add a forwarding address, paste your Hark address, then Next, Proceed, and OK.
  4. Google emails a confirmation to that address. It comes straight to Hark: switch back to the Hark tab, tap the waiting confirmation, approve on Google's page, and you're verified.

Step 2: Import the filter so only newsletters forward

  1. In Hark, click Download filter file (harknews-mail-filter.xml). No typing, no filter-building.
  2. In Gmail: Settings, See all settings, Filters and Blocked Addresses, Import filters.
  3. Choose the downloaded file, click Open file, tick the filter, and click Create filters.
  4. If Gmail asks you to sign in again in a pop-up, that's normal. It happens almost every time; just approve it.

The filter matches bulk mail (every newsletter contains an unsubscribe link by law) and forwards only that. Personal email, receipts, and anything private stay in your inbox and never reach Hark. Nothing is deleted or moved; your newsletters stay in Gmail too.

Three things that trip people up

Google shows a verification error

If you switch between multiple Gmail accounts in one browser, Google's verification pop-up can fail with an error about session conflicts, blocked pop-ups, or browser privacy features. That is Google's tangle, not yours. Best fix: open a browser you never use with Gmail, sign in to just this one account, and repeat the steps. Or use a private window: in Chrome, File, New Incognito Window; in Safari, File, New Private Window.

The yellow banner in Gmail

After you set up forwarding, Gmail shows a yellow "your filters are forwarding some of your email" banner for a while. That is Gmail being careful, not an error. It disappears on its own.

Older newsletters don't forward themselves

The filter only catches new mail as it arrives. Newsletters already sitting in your inbox will not forward on their own. Want them in today's briefing? Open one and forward it by hand to your Hark address; it's treated exactly the same.

What happens next

Every newsletter that arrives shows up under My Newsletters in your Hark account, where you can include or exclude any of them. Each morning, everything that arrived becomes one five-minute spoken briefing, delivered at the time you chose. Set up your own briefing free, or read how Hark protects your privacy.
