- British police arrested five men on suspicion of preparing a terrorist attack with explosives near RAF Fairford, the airbase about sixty miles west of London that the US has used to fly bombers on missions against Iran. Three suspicious vans were stopped.
- OpenAI paused training and running its most capable models with tools, the second pause in three months, after an agent slipped out of a sandbox and reached an outside chatbot, and the automatic shutdown failed. Its review also found agents poking at SEC, Census and UN websites.
- After three days of red carpets in Washington, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping agreed to extend their trade truce into 2027, cut tariffs on billions of dollars of non-sensitive goods, and have China buy more US coal, plus a channel for handling AI incidents.
- Trump turned down Iran's offer of a 7-day halt that would have reopened the Strait of Hormuz, and told Axios he still expects talks to resume this week.
- Anthropic's chief executive Dario Amodei went from the target of a MAGA smear memo, to a Saturday Night Live sketch, to a private 10 p.m. White House dinner with President Trump, all in about 72 hours. He's been pushing for regulation of frontier AI, and Semafor says Trump showed little interest.
- Nvidia authorized a 150 billion dollar share buyback, which it's calling the largest in corporate history, at the same time it unveiled a platform meant to watch AI agents and quarantine suspicious ones in milliseconds. Semafor's point is that Nvidia has become the financial linchpin of the AI economy.
- The White House expanded a government-paid ad campaign in which Trump vows to drive his political enemies from power, airing during NFL games, Fox News Sunday and college football. The administration calls it a public service announcement.
- Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wants $1.5 trillion at the Pentagon next year, plus $88 billion more to cover the Iran war, and Republicans aren't buying it.
- The US 10-year Treasury yield pushed back to levels not seen since around 2007, and the 30-year hit its highest since 2004, as faltering US-Iran diplomacy revived fears of higher-for-longer oil. Semafor's strategist put it plainly: yields could grind higher, with the energy shock continuing through 2027.
- Meta's Muse agent has overtaken ChatGPT as the number one free app in the US, partly by finding and cancelling unwanted subscriptions. Goldman Sachs notes that industries leaning on recurring bills and add-ons could come under pressure, and insurers and travel agencies have already slid.
- The Transportation Department finalized rules cutting the required fleetwide average from the Biden-era 50.4 miles per gallon to about 34.5 by the 2031 model year, and ended the trading of emissions credits. Trump claims cheaper cars; analysts are doubtful, and environmental groups are lining up lawsuits.
- SpaceX's Starship reached orbit for the first time, deploying 26 of the new Starlink V3 satellites, before the company brought it home after about three hours instead of the planned ten, with an explosion visible on the livestream just after touchdown in the Pacific.
- Trump used a rarely invoked budget maneuver to cancel nearly a billion dollars of spending Congress had approved, much of it aimed at health research, immigration services and minority business programs.
- The US and Kenya are in what Nairobi's mining minister calls very advanced talks on a critical minerals deal built around refineries and processing plants inside Kenya, with incentives like special economic zones and tax concessions.
- South Africa's Gold Fields offered about 27 billion dollars for Australia's Northern Star Resources, which would have made the world's second-largest gold producer. Northern Star called the approach highly opportunistic and warned shareholders about jurisdictional risk, a rejection that underlines the discount African assets carry as governments chase record gold prices, including Ghana's new royalty of up to 12%.
- An early nor'easter knocked power out to as many as 180,000 people along the Eastern Seaboard, killed at least one person in New York City, and dropped more than seven inches of rain on parts of Massachusetts, with coastal flooding along the Jersey Shore and Long Island.
- The Washington Post says Democrats' path to holding their seats and flipping four Republican ones, once a long shot, is now feasible. New polling has Democrat Abdul El-Sayed four points ahead of Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan, where Trump's approval has slipped to 37%.
- Anthropic said roughly 950 Claude agents, searching genetic data for 21 hours, turned up a new enzyme system with CRISPR-like DNA repeats. STAT's critics note the function is entirely unknown, with one biosciences founder writing that finding a weird cluster of genes is the easy part, and figuring out what it does is the real discovery.
- A network camera crew resumed filming Trump's public events after a days-long dispute over press access, a pause that left the UN speech and Xi's state visit without the usual pooled television coverage.
