- The Wall Street Journal reports President Trump turned down a seven-day ceasefire offer from Iran, and told officials he expects to resume bombing after the midterms. Tehran had dangled reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restarting nuclear talks in exchange for the U.S. lifting its port blockade.
- Axios is leading with a warning for Republicans: 38 days out from the November 3 midterms, the party is being dragged under by the president's unpopularity. Cook Political Report's Charlie Cook prefers the phrase "red undertow" to "blue wave."
- OpenAI disclosed dozens of incidents where its models misbehaved, including agents poking at the Commerce Department and SEC websites and trying and failing to get into the Education Department's, all without the company knowing. None were breaches, OpenAI stressed.
- Days after a federal judge ordered CNN's White House credentials restored, the network was left off Air Force One for Trump's trip to a college football game in Knoxville. The other four TV pool networks said they'd skip coverage in solidarity.
- Average 30-year mortgage rates passed 7 percent for the first time since early 2025, after the Fed raised rates last week for the first time in three years. Moody's Analytics chief economist told Barron's there's no reason bonds can't keep selling off toward 8 percent or higher.
- The Supreme Court let the administration deploy an expansive online system that uses sensitive data on millions of Americans to hunt for ineligible voters. A lower court had blocked it over privacy and wrongful-removal concerns.
- A potent storm is crawling up the seaboard with strong winds, heavy rain and coastal flooding, and flood alerts cover roughly 33 million people from Virginia to Rhode Island, per NBC News. Airlines have waived change fees for the weekend.
- Microsoft is repositioning Copilot as the AI built for work rather than chasing ChatGPT and Claude as a personal assistant, folding Office products like Excel and Word directly inside it. You can now ask the chatbot to edit a document without leaving Copilot.
- The hookup app has beefed up its Hill lobbying and picked an odd priority: family formation. CEO George Arison teamed up with Senator John Hickenlooper, who also became a parent via surrogate, to push for fully deductible fertility expenses, federal insurance rules covering surrogacy, and a broader definition of infertility that includes same-sex couples.
- Futurist Ramez Naam argues in Noahpinion that recursive self-improvement won't FOOM into superintelligence anytime soon. His math: the current self-improvement loop would need to be roughly 5 to 10 times stronger just to sustain itself, let alone run away.
- In a July stress test, an AI agent tried to slip dangerous code into a widely shared open-source library, disguised as an ordinary update. When the human reviewer got suspicious, the agent didn't back down.
- The Washington Post reports the two countries worked jointly earlier this month to weaken a United Nations plan to regulate AI weapons, stripping out a provision requiring humans to review targets that an AI picks for a strike.
- Sheri Mecklenburg, a career Justice Department prosecutor near retirement, quit under protest over the felony case against six Democratic activists charged after an ICE protest in Illinois. She says U.S.
- Scientists and conservation groups launched an AI-powered network to track biodiversity across the roughly 2.7 million-square-mile Amazon basin using satellites, acoustic sensors and environmental DNA. The team has raised $20 million of the $100 million needed for 10 years, including $14 million from the Bezos Earth Fund.
- After a multiyear probe, Premier League regulators found Manchester City guilty of breaching financial rules, including failing to provide accurate accounts and disclose player and coach payments. No sanction yet, and an appeal is expected.
- Dale Caldwell quit a day after investigators concluded he'd tried to use his office to win a promotion for a girlfriend, and made sexual comments to a staffer. The timing stings: he also served as secretary of state, running New Jersey's elections, including November's midterms.
- POLITICO reports Trump notified congressional leaders he canceled almost $1 billion in appropriated funding without their consent, a pocket rescission hitting immigration services, foreign aid, education, health research and support for minority-owned businesses. Lawmakers call it illegal, and it sets up an ugly funding fight right after the midterms.
- Thélyson Orélien's debut about a Haitian refugee fleeing to Canada was headed for France's top literary prizes until an anonymous X account fed passages into the detector Pangram and called them 100 percent AI generated. Academics using similar tools reported high AI percentages too.
- Houston oil executive Tyler Hassen spent 11 months inside Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency and is now publishing the first tell-all from the inside, called Inside DOGE.
