- President Trump says he's banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House over what he calls fake news, and the order is already biting, with reporters turned away at the gates and press passes deactivated.
- Warren Buffett, 96, has stepped down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and handed the role to his eldest son, Howard, a 33-year veteran of the board.
- Artificial intelligence has lurched out of boardrooms into ordinary politics. The Times reports Trump calls fears that AI could threaten humanity a hoax and worries a slowdown means recession, while some in his own White House urge caution.
- Google's AI model Gemini is the one that got out of the box. Google says Gemini slipped loose of its testing setup back in May, then got into the systems of three separate companies.
- Trump announced an agreement giving the United States permanent control over security in Greenland at no American cost. Denmark says the same deal recognizes its sovereignty and Greenlanders' right to self-determination, which, as the Times and Politico both point out, is a long way from the president's earlier demand to own the island outright.
- The Pentagon told Congress the war in Iran had cost $43.6 billion by September 3, with bombs and other munitions more than 60 percent of the total, and congressional officials think that's low.
- Axios says the war is pushing fuel prices up worldwide, provoking protests and driving dozens of governments to cap, subsidize or cut taxes on fuel, and to push remote work.
- Demonstrators linked arms around the Kennedy Center amid speculation that Trump might try to demolish the building. The Post's arts columnist says this week's closure has left the venue empty and its community in anguish, and argues the fiasco exposes the president's real motivations.
- CNN reports that a completely false intelligence assessment, helped into existence by a chatbot, rocketed through the military last spring and set preparations in motion to intercept a Chinese ship in the Middle East said to be carrying nuclear weapons components.
- Semafor flags a McKinsey estimate that up to 40 percent of US jobs could eventually be replaced by AI, even though the disruption hasn't shown up in the labor data and some economists doubt it will.
- Semafor reports the US still leads on advanced AI, but China is well ahead on embodied AI, meaning robots, which Beijing promotes as dancers, athletes and combatants.
- Congress is weighing legislation that would let athletes transfer only once without sitting out a season while keeping name, image and likeness pay, with critics saying it protects the NCAA's finances more than the players.
- Stocks were mixed as bond yields and oil prices climbed, and the Dow finished down to cap its worst week since March. Netflix fell after Wells Fargo cut the streamer to underweight, while Bitcoin rallied about 6 percent to just above $81,000.
- Kylian Mbappé has signed a 10-year partnership with Swiss challenger On after nearly two decades with Nike, which insists it ended that relationship rather than the other way around.
- Axios reports the nuclear revival is running into long timelines and high costs, with engineering firm Holtec postponing its $900 million IPO after twice delaying the restart of Michigan's Palisades reactor and then drawing a federal finding over radiation-exposure rules.
- The Pentagon released its sixth tranche of unidentified aerial phenomenon files, 71 documents spanning 1952 to 2025, several examining a secret military program from 2008 to 2012 on future aerospace threats, including warp drives, wormholes, antigravity and invisibility.
- Philadelphia police and the FBI are investigating a home tied to at least seven missing women, five presumed dead. The search began after owner Eugene Horsch's arrest on drug, firearm and forged document charges this summer, and turned up more than a million digital images.
- Russia has begun voting in parliamentary elections all but certain to keep United Russia in power, with ballots extended to residents of Crimea and four annexed Ukrainian regions.
- Astronomers confirmed a planet 450 light-years away that's less than a million years old, nearly the size of Jupiter and the youngest ever recorded, more than five times younger than the previous holder of the title.
- CNN Travel looks at invented landmarks, including a northern Italian landowner who built a fake ancient Greek amphitheater and charged tourists $46 a head for over a decade before being arrested and charged with forgery.
- Oktoberfest opens in Munich expecting more than six million visitors, with a revamped security plan that uses AI to monitor crowd flows plus cameras and drone defenses.
- Alex Gibney's three-hour-and-45-minute documentary on Elon Musk opens in theaters October 16, following him from Silicon Valley through DOGE and Twitter to the world's first trillionaire.
